3. Nos anos 90, após a queda da URSS, a população de maioria armênia fez um referendo em Artsakh, pedindo a independência do território em relação ao Azerbaijão. A escolha pela independência foi esmagadora (mais de 90%), mas o resultado nunca foi reconhecido. Ali iniciou-se uma guerra entre Armênia e Azerbaijão, que deixou em torno de 30 mil mortos e acabou com um cessar-fogo em 94.
4. Desde então, a questão de Artsakh nunca foi resolvida, e a região continua oficialmente como parte de Azerbaijão, apesar de 99% dos seus habitantes serem armênios e de ser autogerida. As agressões do Azerbaijão foram reiniciadas este ano. Querem anexar de vez o território, e geram um risco real de limpeza étnica contra a população local. A Armênia é um país pequeno, com poucos recursos para apoiar seus compatriotas, enquanto Azerbaijão usa dinheiro advindo do petróleo e o apoio de Israel e Turquia para seguir os ataques.
